Weird purple tomatoes

Suddenly, at the end of the season, they've decided to put on a crop.  First time growing these, and I frankly have no idea how to tell when they're ripe.  There's enough of them, though, that we can pull them off one at a time and test.

  1. Colored fruit may be racist. I'm not sure. Black tomatoes might be politically correct - best wait until they're completely black. Then you know you're on solid ground.

  2. Pick one and slice it. Then do the taste test. If it is not ripe www.pauladeen.com/bobbys-fried-green-tomatoes

  4. How did this happen? Did a tomato get knocked up by an eggplant?

  5. Whats the name of the variety?

I've grown a few Black/Purple tomatoes, they usually still turn red, its just a darker red (sometimes VERY dark red) often with purple shoulders. Should be pictures on my blog from previous years (this year's crop sucks).
