I wonder what this went in.

  1. That looks like the main drive gear for a ship. The turbine is on the shaft with the small gear, and the shaft with the big gear is drives the screw. The worker is honing the teeth to make sure the gears mate without any vibration.

  2. I agree with Steve. Double helical, double reduction, locked train ship's main propulsion reduction gear.

  3. Never having worked on gearbox components this large I would agree
    with other two posters. All I can say is deburring gears with a
    file is about as monontous as it gets. The biggest I have ever
    worked on were 1/4 this size.

  4. Don't worry, it's safe now!

    The UK police took that man with his potential murder weapon away, and he'll be behind bars for a long time. Now that file has been disposed of safely, and he won't be able to terrorize London with it ever again!
